4 Tips for Studying for TOEFL: how to approach TOEFL, what material to use, and more.

You are about to study for one of the most important tests in your life. Slap on some coffee, find yourself a quiet nook, and get ready to learn how you can ace TOEFL.

Here are 4 tips:

1. Approach TOEFL strategically as a test of skills, not content

TOEFL is a test of skills, not content. This means it's important to study and practice the right skills, not just any material you can get your hands on. In grammar, for example, focus on certain tenses that are tested more often than others on the exam, such as past perfect and conditionals. Also focus on how the wrong use of prepositions can impact your score. These all add up!

2. Use authentic material whenever possible

It may be tempting to use non-authentic material that is specifically designed for TOEFL preparation—but this might not be ideal if you're trying to improve quickly and effectively. When studying or practicing language concepts or skills, use as much authentic material as possible (such as books, articles, academic lectures), because this will give you an idea of what real-life English usage looks like rather than artificial examples designed for the exam format itself.

For authentic materials, we recommend you read these articles we shared before and use the authentic TPO tests from these sites:

3. Plan ahead.

When you start studying for a test like TOEFL, it's important to plan ahead. You should know when you'll be taking the test and what your goals are. Then you can plan how much time you will need to study and what material to use.

4. Know what to expect on the test.

The TOEFL is broken into five sections: reading, listening, speaking, writing, and grammar.  Each section is timed separately with specific directions about what to do in each part of the exam. By knowing what to expect going into the test, you can prepare ahead of time and feel more confident about taking the test once you get into it!
