Across the country, educators and their unions are developing much-needed mental health practices and resources. Many of them will survive after the pandemic, some of them are associated with personal habits, others are enshrined in contracts with employees. During the COVID-19 pandemic, higher education leaders, faculty and staff have learned a lot about how to provide students with a quality educational experience. From skills-based learning to open educational resources and distance learning, there has been a tremendous movement to make graduate programs faster, more effective and more relevant.
In order to prepare students for work in the coming years, higher education needs to be more flexible, innovative and transformative. This requires both careful selection of technology and a proactive learning design method. Higher education institutions need to add digital dimensions to governance structures and processes. Of course, this should involve teachers and consider students’ opinions. Two interrelated elements that are critical to achieving the goals of the institution are more flexible learning options and the definition of student success.
On the other hand, the possibility of an alternative path is the deliberate combination of physical and digital learning with specially selected educational technologies designed to improve the quality of learning (and not just for archiving documents). Disaster preparedness plans will not change higher education, but reformed higher education systems will require new disaster preparedness plans. As COVID still persists, leaders will be encouraged to promote new initiatives and ways to improve student achievement. There are too many considerations in the minds of leaders moving towards 2022, including affordability, promotion, discounts, student loan debt, business partnerships, and ways to further develop DEI initiatives and sustain civic discourse on campus.

North Carolina State College of Education opened the 2021-2022 academic year on August 16 with an expected enrollment of 1,942 students, the highest college enrollment rate in at least a decade.
