This past week, one of our group members asked an important question about the TOEFL iBT Home Edition test:

I will take my test in january 8th, this saturday, in home edition. I saw in a vídeo from IBT site, that for takes notes, I need a erasable pen. Thats the only option? Cant I use a common pencil? Someone have photos about erasable pen?

In the end, the member messaged ETS, and received the following reply. We believe it's useful for everyone to see so you know what kind of pen you are allowed for note-taking:

Dear Test Taker, Thank you for your inquiry.

During your test you will be allowed to use one small whiteboard or one blank piece of paper inside a transparent sheet protector and an erasable marker during your exam for note taking.

You can purchase transparent sheet protectors from your local office supply store or online
Ensure you purchase the correct size to fit a standard size blank sheet of paper (8.5" x 11" or A4)
Place the blank sheet of paper inside the transparent sheet protector
You can use both sides for note taking during your test and you can erase your notes with your hand or the eraser part of the marker, if you have filled the space and need more room
Ensure you use an erasable marker as you will be required to erase your notes after your test and show the blank surface to the proctor.

Please be advised that test takers can test without testing materials. However, if they you decide to test with materials, it is the test takers responsibility for making sure they are aware of the testing materials and requirements to test. Therefore, if you did not have the required materials, we are not able to grant a free reschedule and your fee will not be refunded.

That means you should be writing notes on an erasable sheet protector. We found the cheapest erasable sheet protector on Amazon, if you need one.
